Primitive Planters is a Woman-Owned Small Business. Owner Jennifer Marshall launched the company in 2006 with one idea from a dying trend, plant hangers. With the help of her mother, she turned a prototype fabric plant hanger into the next generation of hangers. With a simple, sleek design she took it to market. Primitive Planters was soon selling at all the major lawn & garden shows. “I was in my element being around customers, forming business relationships, and thoroughly enjoying this new adventure.”
Three years later, with a little apprehension, Jennifer took the advice of her sales rep and added macrame to their line. “Sometimes change can be intimidating but with the advice of my sales rep, we wanted to be the one stop shop for plant hangers. This turned out to be one of the smartest business decisions I have made.” Trade show after trade show Jennifer noticed the same question being asked; “what do you have that’s new?” A very good friend in the industry leaned over to me and said, “you know, if you add new products, people will buy them.” Jennifer took that advice and ran with it.
Within 10 years Primitive planters went from 2 styles to almost 200 styles. This includes fabric, macrame, cotton, natural jute and woven plant hangers as well as branching out to other novelty and home décor items. It has been a challenge to keep up with the demand, but Jennifer and her hard-working team have persevered from working out of the basement, to a three-car garage to finally expanding into an 8000sf space. “It was a major decision to move out of my comfort zone, but we couldn’t have made the move at a better time. As a woman who has raised children while having a career, I understand the need for flexibility in the workplace and offer that to my employees, making for a less stressful environment.”
